Access to safe drinking water is one of the major determinants of a developed community or society’s health condition. Over the last few decades, the government along with local and international NGOs has contributed a lot to increase safe water coverage across the country. However, high arsenic concentration in the groundwater appeared to be a recent threat. It has been estimated that 59 out of 64 districts have arsenic-contaminated groundwater; 249 out of 464 Upazilas are affected. As a result, nearly 80 million people -- more than 65 percent of the country's population live in the arsenic-contaminated areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) has described Bangladesh as “the largest mass poisoning of a population in history”. Chuadanga and Meherpur districts have a very high level of arsenic in the underground water.

IFB has implemented this project in 6 Schools to ensure access to safe and arsenic-free water and hygienic sanitation for the students. The project components include arsenic-free safe drinking water (SIDKO Plant) installation, renovation of existing toilet facilities, and provision of menstrual health education hygienic practices for girl students.

Most of the girls of our country prefer to stay home during their menstruation due to the lack of comfortable facilities at schools and the girls who choose to go to school while they are menstruating, often do not change their menstrual pad for a whole day as toilets are not user friendly and there is no space for pad disposal/pad changing. IFB renovated toilet facilities and installed a proper pad disposal facility for the girls during the period.

IFB facilitated special sessions on reproductive and menstrual health for adolescent girl students. IFB also provided kits, which included two packets of sanitary pads, a hand soap bar, a water bottle, and a pocket booklet on menstrual hygiene.
