Home Garden
Homestead gardening is a traditional but innovative and effective solution that helps to support rural communities to meet their micronutrient need. IFB has been supporting the rural community women across Chuadanga and Meherpur districts to tackle the micronutrient deficiencies of their family members, especially children, to improve their nutrition and livelihoods.
Under this project, IFB trains the rural mothers with technical skills, distributesseed, and also assists them in garden protection. IFB also conducts nutrition training sessions for the mothers to maximize the health benefits and ensure the importance of a balanced diet of homegrown vegetables.
Through the home garden project, low-income families enjoy fresh and organic vegetables year-round. The five-bed model significantly contributesto the reduction of micronutrient deficiencies among children, with access to at least three types of seasonal vegetables at any time of the year. The mothers cultivate seasonal vegetables, and sometimes sell the surplus to generate additional household income that economically empowers the rural women.
IFB has been promoting the home garden initiative to foster healthier, stronger, and more resilient rural families.
